The China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) is China’s primary regulatory authority responsible for supervising and regulating medicines, medical devices, cosmetics, and healthcare products. Established in 2018 and headquartered in Beijing, China, NMPA operates under the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and plays a central role in ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of healthcare products available in China.
NMPA oversees the entire lifecycle of pharmaceutical and medical products, including research and development oversight, clinical trial approvals, product registration, manufacturing inspections, quality control, and post-market safety monitoring.
The organization regulates a wide range of healthcare products including chemical medicines, biological products, vaccines, traditional Chinese medicines, medical devices, diagnostics, and innovative therapies. It evaluates products through scientific review processes before granting approval for commercial use.
NMPA works closely with pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology organizations, research institutions, healthcare providers, and international regulatory agencies to strengthen healthcare product standards and improve regulatory efficiency.
The agency has introduced reforms to align China’s pharmaceutical regulations with international standards and actively participates in global regulatory initiatives, including collaboration with organizations such as the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH).
NMPA provides regulatory guidance for innovative healthcare areas including biologics, gene therapies, advanced medical devices, and digital health technologies. It also manages national systems for adverse reaction monitoring and product safety evaluation.
Through scientific assessment, regulatory oversight, and quality management, NMPA supports pharmaceutical innovation while protecting public health and ensuring that healthcare products meet China’s safety and quality requirements.
